2016 Instructions

                     Smokies hall of fame
                         *Jim Edmonds – 1995-2003
                         *Eric Davis – 1997-2001
                         *Gary Sheffield – 2001-04
                       *Pedro Martinez – 2001-06
*Felix Hernandez – 2010-17

With a 2015 record of 45-45, the Beach just missed going to the Playoffs once again.

This is by far the Beach’s strongest offensive team coming into the auction. They only needed a couple of position players and threw all their money at two #1 starters in the auction:  picking up Max Scherzer & welcoming back King Felix on 3 year mandatory contracts.

Rounding out the auction, the Smokies welcomed back Aroldis Chapman, and picked up setup guys: Eric Goeddel & Hunter Strickland.

Making it to the final of the pre-season tournament, the Beach made it a game to remember, but lost, & anticipates a good season with the team they have assembled.

Scherzer-20games;  Ross-20games;  KingFelix-20games;  Eovaldi-15games;  Latos-5games;  A Wood-10games

Starter#1 Max Scherzer
(Long and hard)

Stays in early when in dots.  Can pitch in 8th with a 2 or more run lead. If 1 runner gets on in 8th, look for situational relief, unless bullpen is tired. If comes to bat in 7th  with no runners on, and we are ahead by 2+ runs, leave in to bat;  If 2 outs and runners on go ahead and PH if tied, losing or 1 run lead. PH for him no matter what in 8th inning.  Closers/bullpen always come in for the 9th  unless leading by 4+ runs.  (see additional comments for no-hitter).

Starter#2  Tyson Ross
(Long and hard)

Same as Scherzer.

Starter#3  Felix Hernandez
(Fairly Long and hard)

Stays in early when in dots. If losing by 4+ runs in top of 5th and he is at bat, go ahead and PH for unless bullpen is tired.  Pull if get 2 runners on in 6th and we are up or down by less than 2 runs. Bullpen in by 7th unless we have a 3+ lead and no runners get on, or he is throwing a no-hitter. Can bat in 7th with a 3+ lead.  Bullpen always come in for the 8th & 9th.   (see additional comments below)

Starter#4  Nathan Eovaldi
(less patience)

Pull as soon as gives up 2 runs after 4th,  or in dots early, unless bullpen is spent and takes one for the team. If runner gets on in top of 5th or 6th, and we are tied or losing, replace with better matchups. Comes out no matter what after mid-5th unless we have a 4+ lead. With that lead, pull as soon as gets 2 runners on. (see additional comments below)

Starter#5  Alex Wood
(less patience)

The LEFTY. Same as Eovaldi.

Starter#6  Mat Latos
(no patience)

Pull as soon as dots or gives up 4 runs and it is a game still (we have the offense to come back). 5th or later, if most of bullpen is available, and score is within 2 runs either way, pull Latos if gets a runner on or gives up a HR. If we are down 2 or more pull him anyway. If up 3 or more, batter by batter to preserve lead. Should be out after 7 innings unless no-hitter (see additional comments) or up 3+ runs.

Specific innings limitations:

None.

Additional comments:

In a no-hitter situation:   all starters can stay in with a 3+ lead. If a runner gets on in 7th or later with 2-run lead or less, than replace Latos, Eovaldi & A Wood, with bullpen. Scherzer, Ross & Felix can stay in until after 1st hit & gets into  dots. (follow instructions above under their name after 1st hit).

Bottom of 7th – See above individual boxes for 1st 3 pitchers if they come to bat. Follow Eovaldi and A Wood boxes in
Regards to whether to bat in bottom of 7th. See Latos box whether he should bat in 7th.
