2018 Virginia Beack Smokies Team Intructions

2017 saw the Beach with the 2nd worst record in the PCL at 39-51. VBS had a 23-22 record at home, but their batting average was 2nd lowest @ .223;  however their pitching was middle of the road in ERA, with lowest HR’s given up in the league & tied for 2nd highest for K’s vs opposing teams.
Felix Hernandez is gone after 8 years on the Smokies, with a terrible year last year. A pair of Lefties were picked up in the www & auction in Jon Lester & Jose Quintana, respectively. Petit will handle the setup duties for new closer Ryan Madson.
Rounding out the auction, the Smokies picked up Kurt Suzuki at catcher, and resigned Freddie Galvis at ss.

Defense

With runner on 3rd, bring in corners from 2nd inning on.

Throwing

3rd out situation, throw thru to plate, cutoff if trailer is >8. If both runners are 10 or more, throw thru to plate. If lead runner is tying run, hold trailer at 1st to prevent setting up winning run (if lead runner is 10 or more to score).

Intentional Walks

WATCH the computer resets of corners in, holding runners, etc after each batter.

Scherzer-20games;  Quintana-20games;  Lester-20games;  Ramirez-20games;  Norris-10games;

Starter#1 Max Scherzer
(Long and hard)

Stays in early when in dots.  Can pitch in 8th with a 2 or more run lead. If 1 runner gets on in 8th, look for situational relief. If comes to bat in 7th  with no runners on, and we are ahead by 2+ runs, leave in to bat;  If 2 outs and runner(s) on, go ahead and PH if tied, losing or 1 run lead. Closers/bullpen always come in for the 9th  unless leading by 4+ runs.(see additional comments for no-hitter).

Starter#2  Jose Quintana
(Long and hard)

Lefty. Same as Scherzer above.

Starter#3  Jon Lester
(some patience)

Lefty. Stays in early when in dots. If losing by 4+ runs in top of 5th and he is at bat, go ahead and PH for unless bullpen is tired.  Pull if get 2 runners on in 6th and we are up or down by less than 2 runs. Bullpen in by 7th unless we have a 3+ lead and no runners get on, or he is throwing a no-hitter. Can bat in 7th with a 3+ lead.  Bullpen always come in for the 8th & 9th.

Starter#4  JC Ramirez
(less patience)

Rule of 4th here if within 4 runs. If still in, Top of 7th – PH for if less than 4+ lead. Can stay in thru 7 inn with a 4+ lead. With that lead, pull as soon as gets 1 runners on, or a run is scored.

Starter#5  Bud Norris
(less patience)

Rule of 4th here if within 4 runs. Definitely out after 6 innings.(6 innings only).

Specific innings limitations:

Norris–-6 innings only.

Additional comments:

In a no-hitter situation: all starters can stay in with a 3+ lead. If a runner gets on in 7th or later with 2-run lead or less, than replace . (follow instructions above under their name after 1st hit).
Note: Norris comes out no-matter-what after 6 innings pitched….

Top of 7th – See above individual boxes for 1st 3 pitchers if they come to bat. Follow  boxes in
regards to whether to bat in top of 7th.

BULLPEN

R’y closer:

Madson{59inn} <comes in to kill a rally in 8th inn in save situation only; can start the 9th. Extra innings: wait for save situation, which probably puts him near last with Familia. Not 2 innings, if possible.

L’y setup & closer:

Chapman{50inn} <can be used any time. If available late, can save vs a lefty heavy lineup; walks the ritey a lot, so don’t bring in vs a ritey with more than 2 runners on.

R’y rally stopper & setup:

Petit{91inn} <can be brought in at any time. Rally stopper vs lefty & riteys. Lots of innings, so can go 2+ innings.

Situational:

     L’y gets L’y:

Banda{26inn} <gets your stud Lefty hitter out where you will not PH for. See notes below for LIMITATIONS.

    -R’y gets R’y:

Strickland{61inn} <can pitch anytime. Best as RvsR. Can pitch to a lefty among string of Rities.

Mid:

Benoit{50inn} <can pitch anytime. Usually 1st in after starters, before 7th inning.

Familia{25inn} <see LIMITATIONS below—only use on road for 4-game series.

Longman/mopup:

Any combo of Benoit, Strickland, Chapman & Petit.

Ideally—Starters go 6, hopefully 7;  Any combo of Petit, Benoit, Strickland, and Chapman as early as 5th. If it is still a game, Petit to stop a rally or keep it close early.

Relief Limitations: FAMILIA will NOT pitch on the road in 3-game series; Unless—The game is in extra innings and he is the next to last reliever available—1 inning only!!!
ON THE ROAD @ 4-game series(@Chi,STL,PB)---will pitch in 4-game series only, 2 inn MAX per series.
{Will pitch at HOME:  1 inn max per 3-game series, and 2 inn max per 4-game series}

Banda—Lefty specialist; 1 inn or less per all 3 & 4 game series; Should see your stud Lefty hitter that will not be PH for.
