2017 Virginia Beack Smokies Team Intructions

2017 Instructions

 With a 2016 record of 56-34 and a great 1st half of the season run, the Beach lost in the 1st round of Playoffs to Las Vegas 4 games to 2.  VBS had a league batting average of .242; the 4th best era of 3.39 & pitched the most KO’s in the league.

With Felix Hernandez having a subpar year, the Beach spent money on starter Johnny Cueto to anchor the #2 spot behind Max Scherzer, as well as lefty Matt Moore to fill the #4 spot.

Rounding out the auction, the Smokies picked up slugger Matt Kemp on a 2-yr contract to protect Paul Goldschmidt.  And, Todd Frazier***  made it to the majors simply because of his defensive glove @ 3b & opportunities to PH in small ballparks.

In the pre-season tournament, the Beach made it to the Final Four.

Additional notes on lineups:  *Lineups #2  -- use MARTIN @ 2b with Pitchers listed.
**Lineups #3 – use FRAZIER @ 3b with Ballparks listed.
      Lineup #1—-Standard vs Lefties for all pitchers and ballparks NOT listed in Lineups #2 & #3.

     Lineup #5---vs ballparks listed.
      Lineup #6---vs Pitchers listed. This LINEUP supercedes lineup #5 if your pitcher is listed.

  • In Lineups #1 & #2 & #3 above, If  LEFTY Starter comes out early for a ritey, all stay in through 7 if we are winning, except for Martin in Lineup #2, who moves to catcher for Ross, & Panik goes to 2b immediately. Start swapping out in OF for better defense from mid-7th and on.

If losing, then still make above changes vs Ritey thru 5 innings, then go with best matchups;   Keep same lineup for Lefty until ritey comes in – then best matchups.

  • In Lineups #4 & #5 & #6,  If RITEY Starter comes out early for a lefty or ritey, leave all in if we are leading thru 6 innings. If up by only 1 run, go with best matchups after 6th inning. Go with better defense in OF from mid-7th on if winning by 2 or more runs. If tied or losing, go with best matchups from 5th inning on.

Never comes out: Goldschmidt & Inciarte (unless blowout – see above);

MISCELLANEOUS
Pinch hitting / Clutch / PR / Stealing

  • PH vs Lefty:Martin, Escobar, Tomlinson;

For Power:Frazier, Ross, Pham, Tomas, Hazelbaker[L];
Can use Pitchers – Scherzer for early pigeon if not starting an upcoming game in your series;

  • PH vs Ritey:Martin, Tomlinson, Escobar, Parker[L];

For Power:Ross, Hazelbaker[L], Frazier, Pham, Tomas;
Can use Pitchers – Scherzer  for early pigeon if not starting an upcoming game in your series;

  • Clutch:Escobar, Goldschmidt & Tomlinson.
  • PR(s):Tomlinson, Hazelbaker, Pham, Parker, Frazier;

Pitchers: Cueto & Scherzer [13], Eovaldi & Moore [12].

  • Steal: You must hold*----Galvis, Tomlinson, Hazelbaker, Inciarte, Frazier, Goldschmidt;
  • NOTE:Try and save Pham & Parker for late defense.

Bunting / H&R / #2 slot / Pitchers hitting

  • Pitchers sacrifice, even with two strikes.
  • Can PH in BUNT situations--‘A’ bunters:  Scherzer & Cueto.
  • Bunt:  Galvis[A];   Inciarte, Hazelbaker & Ross if you are playing back.
  • H&R:  Panik, Inciarte & Escobar with fast runner at 1st, and you have a stud starting pitcher in, & we need to start something.
  • #2 slot:  Galvis will always bunt.
  • Early PH:  consider Scherzer if he is not starting later in your series.

Offense

  • Typical stealing decisions:   70% to 2nd (65% if you don’t hold on); 75% to 3rd;
  • Safety squeeze:   Use only if an ‘A’ bunting pitcher is up, or PH who is an ‘A’ bunter (no position players are ‘A’ bunters).
  • Score at 70%;   or 50% with two outs;  If pitcher due up prior to 6th inning, and 2 outs and a non-PH situation, score at 40% or more.
  • Send low percentage trailer to 2nd, never to 3rd, when you throw home and lead runner is 75% or less to score. If pitcher is due up and 2 outs, send all trailers to force you to concede a run.
  • Extra base:   75% or better with 1 out or less—Don’t make 3rd out.
  • Tagup from 2nd to 3rd:  Always try for if 1-19 dice roll is not an out.

Defense

  • Holding runners:  Hold all * stealers.  Hold a non--* stealer only if his chances are 35% to get the lead and 70% to steal.   ++If runners on 1st and 3rd, bottom of the 9th or extra innings and tied or lefty hitter is up, don’t hold runner on 1st.
  • Corners in:  Bring corners in for all probable bunt situations thru 7 innings and pitchers with runners on.  If you H&R when I bring the corners in, then set the infield back the next time. (I’d rather give up the sac then the hit and run).

With runner on 3rd, bring in corners from 2nd inning on.

  • Infield in:  Play INFIELD IN to cut down tying or go-ahead run from 6th inning on.
  • Outfield in:  runner on 3rd (12 or better) and 9th inning and less than 2 outs and winning run.

Throwing

  • Outfield throws/cutoffs:   Throw thru to plate on all trying to score at 16 or less .  17 or more to score, hold trailer.

3rd out situation, throw thru to plate, cutoff if trailer is >8. If both runners are 10 or more, throw thru to plate. If lead runner is tying run, hold trailer at 1st to prevent setting up winning run (if lead runner is 10 or more to score).

  • Throws to 3rd:  stop trail runners from advancing.
  • Always get the sure out on Defense Option plays, unless runner is 1-3 or less to succeed.

Intentional Walks

  • Always no matter what after 7th inning:  Anyone who has hit 2 HR’s already;
  • Your stud hitter in the 8th or later with runners on & we have a 1 or 2-run lead, to get to a better matchup. (Do not do if the next matchup is another stud PH) or it puts a game-winning runner on 2nd.
  • Consider walking the #8 slot if there are 2 outs and the pitcher is due up early in the game, or you probably won’t pinch hit for your stud pitcher late in the game. Do not do if puts runner on 2b late in the game.

 Batter/Pitcher matchups to avoid:  Please PH for Galvis & Panik in situations to tie or setup go-ahead run in 9th or later.
WATCH the computer resets of corners in, holding runners, etc after each batter

Scherzer-20games;  Cueto-20games;  KingFelix-20games;  Moore-20games;  Eovaldi-10games;

Starter#1 Max Scherzer
(Long and hard)

Stays in early when in dots.  Can pitch in 8th with a 2 or more run lead. If 1 runner gets on in 8th, look for situational relief. If comes to bat in 7th  with no runners on, and we are ahead by 2+ runs, leave in to bat;  If 2 outs and runners on, go ahead and PH if tied, losing or 1 run lead. Closers/bullpen always come in for the 9th  unless leading by 4+ runs.  (see additional comments for no-hitter).

Starter#2  Mike Cueto
(Long and hard)

Same as Scherzer.

Starter#3  Felix Hernandez
(Fairly Long and hard)

Stays in early when in dots. If losing by 4+ runs in top of 5th and he is at bat, go ahead and PH for unless bullpen is tired.  Pull if get 2 runners on in 6th and we are up or down by less than 2 runs. Bullpen in by 7th unless we have a 3+ lead and no runners get on, or he is throwing a no-hitter. Can bat in 7th with a 3+ lead.  Bullpen always come in for the 8th & 9th.   (see additional comments below)

Starter#4  Matt Moore
(less patience)

The Lefty.   Pull as soon as gives up 3 runs after 4th,  or in dots early, unless bullpen is spent and takes one for the team. If runner gets on in top of 5th or 6th, and we are tied or losing, Moore comes out for a better matchup. Top of 7th – PH for if less than 4+ lead. Can stay in thru 7 inn with a 4+ lead. With that lead, pull as soon as gets 2 runners on, or a run is scored. (see additional comments below)

Starter#5  Nathan Eovaldi
(less patience)

Same as Matt Moore;  Definitely out after 7 innings.
Can relieve when not starting your series – mopup.

Specific innings limitations:

None.

Additional comments:

In a no-hitter situation:   all starters can stay in with a 3+ lead. If a runner gets on in 7th or later with 2-run lead or less, than replace Felix, Eovaldi & Moore, with bullpen. Scherzer & Cueto can stay in until after 1st hit. (follow instructions above under their name after 1st hit).

Top of 7th – See above individual boxes for 1st 2 pitchers if they come to bat. Follow Felix, Moore & Eovaldi boxes in regards to whether to bat in top of 7th.

BULLPEN

R’y closer:

Familia{78inn} <can enter anywhere in 8th inning—but try not to, with runners on>

L’y closer:

Chapman

R’y setup:

Strickland<try not to enter with runners on>   Johnson<ok to enter with runners on>

L’y setup:

Chapman{58inn}

Situational:

    -R’y gets R’y:

Strickland

    -R’y gets L’y:

Hatcher(should not see a ritey).

    -L’y gets L’y:

Logan(can see a 1 ritey to get to another lefty—but not in a close game).

    -L’y gets R’y:

Chapman(setup/closer)

Mid:

Strickland & Johnson

Longman/mopup:

Strickland, Johnson & Eovaldi(when not starting your series)

Additional Comments:---Ideally—Starters go 6, hopefully 7;  Any combo of Logan, Hatcher & Johnson in 6th. Any combo
of Logan, Chapman, Johnson & Strickland in 7th & 8th.  Any combo of  Chapman & Familia vs best matchups to close 9th.
Familia can enter as early as 8th inning +.

Relief Limitations: Hatcher should avoid Riteys whenever possible. {Rite Vs Lefty only}. If there’s a chance you will PH
with a ritey hitter, than do not bring in Hatcher, unless no other options – I would rather take a chance on a pitcher already
in dots, then Hatcher vs a ritey hitter.
