Virgina Beach Smokies: 2019 Instructions.

The Beach finished just 1 game out of the playoffs in 2018. Kris Bryant is now a Smokie.
Path to the Playoffs:
Not rebuilding here. Weak starters, better bullpen. Carlos Martinez is the only semi-hard. Good OBP offense. The Beach feels like they can beat you with their bats, so don’t give up
on them if they are behind late. Its still dice & cards, but the offense is the strength.

Prior to the 5th
If your lefty Starter comes out, no changes until top of 6th if we are winning by 2 or more. If losing in top of 5th or later, best matchup at 2b. If your righty Starter is replaced by a lefty, all can stay in till top 7th if we are winning. Best matchups at 2b if we are behind.
Top of the 7th
If your lefty is out, look for best matchups at c, 2b. If your righty is out and we are losing, look for best hitting matchups. If we are winning, look for best defense to come in mid 8th.

Position by position breakdown
Catcher Suzuki vs both; Barnes vs Leftys. Briceno is a PH and possible late defense.

1B This is Goldy’s team. All 1B, all the time. Never comes out. Descalso will play 1B due to injury. Villar to 2B. Briceno is 2nd in for injury at 1B.

2B Descalso vs both; Galvis & Barnes vs Lefty. Villar is injury backup.

3B Bryant is the guy. Descalso is 1st in for injury. Villar is 2nd backup or at 2B for Descalso.

SS Didi G is the 1-year guy, everyday, all day. Galvis is the backup.

LF McCutchen will start in case of injury. Bryant to RF, Descalso or Villar to 3B. After 4 innings if a Ritey is in, Cordero will play LF, McCutchen moves to RF, and Bryant moves to 3B. Use compare for 2b. End of 6 inn, Cordero should be in LF – see above.

CF Pham will start in case of injury. McCutchen to LF, Bryant to RF. Villar or Descalso starts at 3B. After 4 innings, Cordero will play CF, Pham will move to LF, McCutchen to RF and Bryant to 3B. Use compare for 2B.

RF Bryant will start in case of injury; Descalso or Villar would start at 3B. After 4 innings if a Ritey is in, Cordero will play RF, Bryant moves to 3B. Descalso or Villar would move to 2B or out. Use compare. End of 6 inn, Cordero should be in RF – see above.

Player Usage Limitations:

Pitcher hitting / Pinch hitting: Use compare and common sense here please.

Defense

Defense/depth chart:  With a 2+ run lead in the mid-8th, my best defense highlighted should be in, unless used earlier vs a Lefty starter. C-Briceno can be in for defense if Barnes unavailable.

(NOTES):

Starter#1 Martinez
(long and hard - sorta)

Has only 119 innings & a decent card. He should go at least 5 innings, hopefully 6 even in dots. Definitely out after 6 innings. Best matchups for 7-9th inning.

Starter#2 Godley
(patience)

Trying to get thru the 6th, into the 7th inning. If he gets tired, you can pull him. If he gives up 4 runs you can pull him if he is tired. If he is NOT tired and has given up 4 runs, it depends on the score. Within 2 runs either way leave him in until he gets 2 runners on or gives up another run, then look for better matchup in BP.

Starter#3 Quintana
(some patience)

He is a Lefty. Trying to get thru 6 innings, hopefully into 7th with a lead & can go longer if cruising with a 4+ run lead, but out if gets 2 runners on. Pull him when tired or given up 4 runs.

Starter#4 Barria
(some patience)

Has only 129 innings. 5-6 innings would be good. Generally, the pen is better at that point. Pull him if he gives up 4 runs or gets tired. Definitely out after 6 innings.

Starter#5 Holland
(no patience)

He is a lefty that is very tough on your lefty in the game. He can be removed anytime the rules allow, so start looking at things in the 3rd inning if your rities are jumping all over him. If he is cruising, then go to the 4th and pretty much after 4 innings it is a batter by batter proposition. Floro, Petit, Santana & Familia can be 1st in. Use compare for upcoming series of batters.

Specific innings limitations:

Martinez--6 innings max. Barria--6 innings max.

Top of 7th:

PH for Godley, Quintana & Holland if losing. Same if winning by 3 or less. If we have a 4+ lead, let bat---but pull in Bottom of 7th if gets 2 runners on, or another run is scored. PH always for Martinez & Barria---they only pitch 6 innings, never more.

Additional comments:

Bullpen has lots of innings & is better than the Starters. Would like to see the Starters go at least 6 innings, then turn it over to the Pen. If a Starter does not last thru 6 innings, 1st reliever in can be Petit, Familia, or Santana. Use compare for upcoming series of batters. Starters can take one for the team if your team jumps out to a huge lead early. No-Hitter: use Top of 7th philosophy.

BULLPEN

R’y closer:

Moronta can see a batter or two in the 8th if needed & finish the 9th. Backup for Chapman.

L’y closer:

Chapman can see a batter in 8th if needed & finish the 9th. Backup for Moronta.

R’y setup:

Familia & Floro

L’y setup:

Chapman can setup or close.

Situational:

    -R’y gets R’y:

Familia, Floro, Santana

    -R’y gets L’y:

Norris, Moronta, Petit

    -L’y gets L’y:

Holland(when not starting your series) & Chapman

    -L’y gets R’y:

Chapman

Longman/mopup:

If Starter gets ripped early & in dots, and is not taking one for the team, Petit or Santana can be 1st in. If its still close, Familia or Floro can keep it close. If it’s a complete blowout and starter is done taking one for the team, Norris can mopup & finish.

Additional comments:

Bullpen is better than Starters with LOTS of innings & 7 relievers. Holland the Lefty, can pitch vs your Lefty if not Starting your series. Norris should not pitch to a ritey unless in a blowout mopup situation. Santana & Petit give up HR vs Leftys and should not pitch in 8th or later in a close game unless no choice with a tie and extra innings. Familia, Floro, Chapman, and Moronta don’t give up the HR. Closers: Either Moronta or Chapman, depending on your 8th & 9th inning lineups.
