2017 St. Louis Riverboat Gamblers

PCL Championships: 1996, 1997, 2007, 2008

2017 Team Instructions

St. Louis is coming off a highly successful year in which led the PCL in hitting and speed.  We made it to the World Series, but lost. Because STL went “all in” in 2016, the cupboard was bare and needed major restocking this year.  The 2017 mission statement is to reload while winning as many games as possible.  The 2017 Gamblers strength will be strong on the offense side, but will have below average defensive and starting pitching.  Their starters will be particularly vulnerable to implosions, but a fully stocked pen is ready at the rescue.

Last minute Roster Move:

STL promoted Mauricio Cabrera to the majors and put David Peralta in the minors.

Special Instructions for batters:

The following players never come out Zobrist, Posey, Cabrera, Yelich, CARGO.

H&R Posey and Peraza are both B’s if someone with decent speed is on 1st with less than 2 outs.

Platoon / Injury

Lineup Instructions

Catcher:

Posey starts in most lineups and stays in once he’s in the game.

1b:

Cabrera starts and never comes out.

2b:

Zobrist starts and never comes out.  If Zobrist is injured then Arcia starts at SS and Peraza moves to 2b.  Arcia never bats against a RHP.  Swanson should PH for him vs RHP and stay in the game.

SS

Peraza starts vs. right handed pitchers and Arcia against lefties. Arcia never bats vs. RHP. If Peraza is injured then Arcia starts, but Swanson PH for him vs the first RHP he sees and stays in the game.

3b:

Lamb starts against righties and Cabrera against lefties.  Lamb never bats against lefties. Fraizer should bat for Lamb and stay in.  If Lamb gets hurt, Miggy takes over 3b; Herrmann to 1b and Posey to C.

Of:

Yelich and CARGO play every inning with Broxton/Puig platooning vs. L/R, respectively.

Lineup Instructions

Double switch!

I love to double switch, but not many opportunities to do that this year.

PH vs. L

Swanson, Fraizer, Broxton, Arcia, Herrmann are all bats to compare.

PH vs. R

Fraizer, Herrmann, Swanson, Peraza, and Puig should all be compared.

MISCELLANEOUS

Pitcher hitting / Pinch hitting

Pitchers sacrifice, even with two strikes.

No special instructions.  Just use your best judgment.

Base running

Stealing:  This team has developing speed and should ramp up to be a fast team; however, we are not there yet.  Here is what we have this year:  Broxton (A), Peraza (A), Arcia (B), Zobrit (C), Posey (C), Yelich (C), Herrmann (C), Lamb (C), Puig (C), Frazier (C), and Swanson (C).

Who to H&R and when:  Peraza and Posey are B’s.

Don’t make the 1st or 3rd out running from 1st to 3rd.  Send runner from 1st to 3rd aggressively in other situdations (65+%) because you will likely stop the runner from going to second.

On a play to the plate, send the trailers at 60% or better.

Throwing

Outfield throws/cutoffs: Generally be conservative early in the game and more aggressive late in the game.

Always get the sure out on Defense Option plays, unless (1) the chances of the leading runner being safe are less than 35%, or (b) its past the 7th inning and it allows the leading or winning run to score.

Intentional Walks

Generally, do not let your best hitter beat me late in the game with first base open and runners on.  I hate it when that happens.

Starting Pitching Instructions

Wainwright (199 over 20 starts) and Bradley (142 over 13)

Wainwright and Bradley are workhorses.  They pitch until in dots – no matter how many runs he gives up or until you PH for him in the 8th or 9th.

Walker (134) and Wacha (138)

This group can average 7 innings per start.  So, they should generally pitch until dots, but PH for them somewhere between the 6th to 8th inning even if not in dots.

Taillon (104)

Rookie Jameson Taillon will get 16 starts and can average 6.5 innings per start.  He should go until dots, but PH for him somewhere between the 6th to 7th inning.

de la Rosa

Rubby is squeezing in three starts this year; only one road game not played by me.  He should come out in dots or PH in the 6th or 7th inning.

Additional comments

The bullpen is stocked with high risk (lots of walks and diamonds), high reward (lots of K’s) guys.  There are 3 lefties and 4 righties, so lot’s to choose from.

Siegrist (2) is typically the first one in the game from the pen because he’s a 2-inning lefty with 62 innings.  That sets up the rest of the pen to work through your platoon guys.

If the game gets away from us, then go to Kelly; otherwise, progress to righties Grimm/Cabrera or the lefties Dayton/Lyons.

Dayton:  he is the situational stopper.  Bring him in with runners on base in a tight game at any point to pitch to 1-3 batters.

Additional comments:  Have fun!
