2016 Team Instructions

After just missing out on the playoffs the last couple of years due to a plethora of TJS, the 2016 Gamblers are focused on contending for this year’s PCL title. We have pretty good starting pitching with one elite star (Arrieta), an above average pen, and a lineup containing two batting champs (Miggy and Dee Gordon). We are probably one of the three top teams in the league heading into the season, but we might not be the best team within our own division?!! VBS will be tough and we’ll go head-to-head with them all year long.

 Special Instructions for batters:

The following players never come out Gordon, Cervelli, Pollock.

H&R Simmons/Ahmed (B) if Yellich is on 1st with less than 2 outs.

 Platoon / Injury

Lineup Instructions

Catcher:

Cervelli starts and doesn’t come out.

1b:

Miggy or bust.

2b:

Gordon all the way.

SS

Simmons vs. R and Ahmed vs. L. Ok to PH and switch as needed, especially if we are behind late in the game.

3b:

Lamb vs. R and Rendon v. L, but Gosselin is the best 3b hitter on both sides of the card. So, he’s a good choice to PH and play 3b if we are trying to catch up in a game. Rendon is the best fielder and more balanced than Lamb, who should never hit against a lefty pitcher.

Of:

Pollock always plays. Peralta and Gutierrez platoon in rf with Yelich mostly in lf.

Lineup Instructions

Double switch!

I love to double switch, but not many opportunities to do that this year.

PH vs. L

Gutierrez is the hammer. Please keep him in the game once he enters. Other hitters who don’t start against lefties who could PH: Gosselin, Peraltra, Montero, Giavotella.

PH vs. R

Gutierrez (see above). Other hitters who don’t start against righties who could PH: Gosselin, Giavotella, Montero.

MISCELLANEOUS

Pitcher hitting / Pinch hitting

Pitchers sacrifice, even with two strikes.

No special instructions. Just use your best judgment.

Base running

Stealing: This team has speed and can be very aggressive on the basepaths. Gordon (AA), Pollock (AA), Yelich (B), and Peralta (C) can all steal and take the extra base at 65% or better.

Who to H&R and when: with Yellich on first base and less than 2 outs, please H&R Simmons/Ahmed (B).

Don’t make the 1st or 3rd out running from 1st to 3rd. Send runner from 1st to 3rd aggressively in other situdations (65+%) because you will likely stop the runner from going to second.

On a play to the plate, send the trailers at 60% or better.

Throwing

Outfield throws/cutoffs: Generally be conservative early in the game and more aggressive late in the game.

Always get the sure out on Defense Option plays, unless (1) the chances of the leading runner being safe are less than 35%, or (b) its past the 7th inning and it allows the leading or winning run to score.

Intentional Walks

Generally, do not let your best hitter beat me late in the game with first base open and runners on. I hate it when that happens.

Starting Pitching Instructions

Arrieta and Liriano

Pitch until dots or the 7th. If the game is close (within one run, then look to PH and go to a great pen!).

Cueto, Wacha, and Walker

These guys are highly suspect. Please PH for them if we are losing or tied after the 5th. Please remove if they have given up 4 runs. Kelley (2) is the guy to bring in early in the game to regain control. He can pitch 2-3 innings to help get us back into it.

The bullpen:
