2018 Team Instructions

St. Louis is coming off a rebuilding season after going “all in” in 2016.  The rebuilding was compromised by poor rookie and veteran performance. The cupboard is partially stocked, but still needs another major makeover this year.  With that in mind, STL loaded up on veteran starting pitching.  The new additions include “Thor,” Cueto, and King Felix to go with 2019 returning starters Michael Wacha, Renaldo Lopez, and Jameson Taillon. The 2018 mission statement is to reload while winning as many games as possible.

 Special Instructions for batters:

Marte, Puig, and Cargo struggle vs. lefties.  They typically don’t bat against lefty pitchers.  Ok to PH Renfroe in the middle of the game vs a lefty pitcher and then PH for Renfroe later vs. a righty reliever.

MISCELLANEOUS

Pitcher hitting / Pinch hitting

Pitchers sacrifice, even with two strikes.

No special instructions.  Just use your best judgment.

Base running

Stealing:  This team has developing speed and should ramp up to be a fast team; however, we are not there yet.  Here is what we have this year: Peraza (A); Marte (A); Arcia (B); Puig (B).  These are guys who can run.

Who to H&R and when: H&R when one of our stealers is on first, less than 2 outs, a B/C H&R batter is up, and a power pitcher is on the mound (high K’s).

Don’t make the 1st or 3rd out running from 1st to 3rd.  Send runner from 1st to 3rd aggressively in other situdations (65+%) because you will likely stop the runner from going to second.

On a play to the plate, send the trailers at 60% or better.

Throwing

Outfield throws/cutoffs: Generally be conservative early in the game and more aggressive late in the game.

Always get the sure out on Defense Option plays, unless (1) the chances of the leading runner being safe are less than 35%, or (b) its past the 7th inning and it allows the leading or winning run to score.

Intentional Walks

Generally, do not let your best hitter beat me late in the game with first base open and runners on.  I hate it when that happens.

Starting Pitching Instructions

Walker (157 innings) and Wacha (166 innings)

These are my best starters and they generally pitch until dots.  They are the “long and hard” guys and can try to complete the game I have a 2 run lead or more after the 7th, but apply a quick hook from the 7th inning forward.

Taillon (134 innings)

Taillon has been forced into the #3 slot this year despite his personal health issues.  He will try to go 7, but pull him in dots or after giving up 4 runs.

Cueto (147 innings) and Hernandez (87 innings)

Waiting until next year on these guys.  This year please remove them as soon as legal.  Please bat for them after the 3rd inning or remove them after 4 innings.  Lyons or Hader should take over and then PH for them next time up.

The bullpen:

Bullpen Instructions

Closer:

Bradley has 73 innings, so the can pitch the 7th - 9th.  He is a 2-inning reliever so he can pitch up to 5 innings every series should I be lucky enough to have 2 save chances.

R’y setup:

Stammen.  He is also a 4 hitter and can bat for himself.

L’y setup:

Hader

Situational:

    -R’y gets R’y:

Stammen (80 innings).  He is particularly good to bring in after Wacha and he can go long at AGN, HAW, LVB, SBM, VBS, and PBC.  Again, he is a 4-hitter and can bat for himself in the middle of a game.

    -R’y gets L’y:

    -L’y gets L’y:

Hader (48 innings)

    -L’y gets R’y:

Ryu

Longman

Ryu (127 innings)

Mop-up

Ramos (58 innings) and Ryu

Additional comments

Lyons (54 innings) is typically the first reliever in the game to get out of trouble and force your manager to commit to the left bashers (or not).  He can pitch a couple of innings.  Lyons is a good choice to follow Taillon, Cueto, and Hernandez.

Ryu (127 innings): if the starter gets shelled prior to the 4th then Ryu is a good choice to bring into the game to eat up some mid-game innings.

Additional comments:  Have fun!
