2019 Team Instructions: 2019 PCL Preseason Tournament Finalist.

St. Louis is coming off another rebuilding season.  The rebuilding was mostly successful and STL appears to have a good chance at making a playoff run this year after making the finals of the PCL tourney.

Path to the playoffs: This team should have above average offense and pitching.  Neither is great, but both are solid.  Balance is the name of the game here.

Special Instructions for batters: McNeil is the only guy with limited at-bats (225).  Please pull him in blowouts and late in the game for defense.  Zobrist takes over.

Platoon / Injury

Lineup Instructions

Catcher:

Posey starts most games and doesn’t come out.  When Wieters starts it’s to get an additional lefty bat in the lineup. Wieters should not bat vs. a lefty pitcher.

1b:

Hoskins vs. right and Zimmerman vs. left.  Hoskins should not hit vs lefties and Zimmerman should not hit against righties.  Zobrist is more balanced and should bat after Hoskins/Zimmerman have been exposed and finish up at 1b.

2b:

McNeil is the primary; Zobrist is secondary.

SS

Rosario and Peraza platoon.  Starter says in the game.

3b:

Carpenter starts and doesn’t come out.

Of:

CF: Marte starts and doesn’t come out.
LF: platoon between Peralta (vs. R) and Ozuna (vs. L)
RF: platoon between Puig (vs. R) and Renfroe (vs. L)

Lineup Instructions

Double switch!

I love to double switch, but not many opportunities to do that this year.

PH vs. L

Zimmerman, Ozuna, Peraza, Renfroe, Zobrist

PH vs. R

Hoskins, Peralta, Puig, McNeil, Zobrist, Renfroe, Peraza

MISCELLANEOUS

Pitcher hitting / Pinch hitting

Pitchers sacrifice, even with two strikes.

No special instructions.  Just use your best judgment.

Base running

Stealing:  This team has developing speed and should ramp up to be a fast team; however, we are not there yet.  Here is what we have this year: Peraza (A); Marte (A); Arcia (B); Puig (B).  These are guys who can run.

Who to H&R and when: H&R when one of our stealers is on first, less than 2 outs, a B/C H&R batter is up, and a power pitcher is on the mound (high K’s).

Don’t make the 1st or 3rd out running from 1st to 3rd.  Send runner from 1st to 3rd aggressively in other situdations (65+%) because you will likely stop the runner from going to second.

On a play to the plate, send the trailers at 60% or better.

Throwing

Outfield throws/cutoffs: Generally be conservative early in the game and more aggressive late in the game.

Always get the sure out on Defense Option plays, unless (1) the chances of the leading runner being safe are less than 35%, or (b) its past the 7th inning and it allows the leading or winning run to score.

Intentional Walks

Generally, do not let your best hitter beat me late in the game with first base open and runners on.  I hate it when that happens.

Starting Pitching Instructions

Syndergaard, Taillon, and Lopez

They are all solid pitchers and the heart of my staff.  They should pitch until dots.  PH for them after the 6th if we are losing.

Ryu (82 innings)

Eight road starts.  Ryu should follow the “rule of 3.”  He can pitch until he is in dots or gives up 3 runs then he’s out unless STL has a 2+ run lead.  Ryu has a great card so he might do very well despite the fact he’s a lefty. Six innings max.

Wacha (84 innings)

Zero road starts that I won’t manage.  I got this… (6 max)

The bullpen:

Bullpen Instructions

Closer:

Ramos (1; 43 IP).  Ramos is my 9th inning closer.  He is lights out and is reserved for save or late game high leverage situations.

R’y setup:

Hirano (2; 66 IP).  Hirano can come in early for Ryu or late if Hader has been in.  Hirano is excellent late in the game.

L’y setup:

Hader (2; 81 IP).  Hader is typically the first one in the game following the righty starters.  He can pitch 2+ innings per outing.

Situational:

    -R’y gets R’y:

Stammen (2; 79 IP).  Stammen or Ferguson can come in to face a righty batter in tight situations.  Ferguson is excellent in large BP like SBM or AGN.

    -R’y gets L’y:

Bradley (2; 72 IP). Bradley can come in to face a string of mostly lefty hitters.

    -L’y gets L’y:

Hader (2; 81 IP)

    -L’y gets R’y:

Ferguson (3; 49 IP)
