2018 Instructions

2018 Instructions

This squad will be a continuation of recent history it seems, featuring the best bullpen in the league, but will we get to use it?  We rebuilt the offense enough to make it to the preseason finals (adding Arenado, Bellinger, Hoskins and resigning Cano), but that came at the expense of not being able to upgrade the starting pitching as much as was hoped.  If the starters get to the middle of the game with a lead, the Bandits will be tough because of the pen.  If we are down after the midpoint, it will be harder to take advantage of the great pen. We will see…

Platoon / Injury

Player Usage Limitations:

Position by Position:

C:   Flowers starts all games, Cervelli is the backup.  I will manage Flowers usage at home (he walks a lot but can’t finish all games).  On the road, Flowers never comes out.

1B: Bellinger plays all the time unless injured.  Solarte is the injury backup

2B: Cano starts against all rightys, Reyes against the leftys.

SS: Cozart starts all the time and only comes out if injured. Mercer is the injury backup.

3B: Arenado starts all the time and never comes out. Solarte or Reyes can be injury backup.

OF: Markakis plays all the time. Hoskins, Lagares, and Goodwin all start in multiple lineups and all have limited innings.  Calhoun is the worst of the bunch, has plenty of innings, and I will use him at home to keep the others from going over innings.

The back end of the bullpen is loaded again, so here is the plan for the starters.  Starters only pitch in the 7th with a big lead (like 5 runs or more) or way behind and scheduled to hit in the bottom of the 7th.

Williams

Try to get 5 or 6 IP.  Against a lefty dominated lineup he should not pitch the 6th unless way ahead (see De La Rosa or Ramirez). Likely PH for him in the top of the 6th if we are rallying.  See above for my thoughts on pitchers this year.

Happ

Try to get 5 or 6 IP.  A lefty who can get hurt by your rightys (oops).  Vincent or Ramirez the likely first guy in if before the 7th.  Likely PH for him in the top of the 6th if we are rallying.   Only pitches late with a huge lead.

Roark

Righty who gets the rightys, but the lefty loaded lineups will be a problem.  See Williams.

Teheran

A balanced but mediocre card with a few too many diamonds.  See Williams for the plan.

Delgado

Righty screwballer with 10 starts.  Only pitches in the 7th if he is facing leftys or switch hitters.

Specific innings limitations:

None.

Additional comments:

All these guys come out in dots if it is still a game.  If we’re blown out early, the starter can go.

BULLPENDon’t fall behind this team…Ramirez, Vincent, and De La Rosa are solid and can get us to the final three. Cishek, Nicasio, and Jansen are nails at the back end of the pen.

Jansen

68 IP

Closer, perfect vs Rightys, plenty good vs leftys.  Can get the last 6 outs.

Cishek

45 IP

Closer #2 versus rightys.  Can be a “stopper in the 5th-7th against a killer righty and can stay.  Can close if Jansen is tired, can pitch setup to get to Jansen.

Nicasio

72 IP

Closer versus leftys, better than Jansen if he will face leftys and Switch hiters.  Great setup to get to Jansen. Stopper against leftys, and can stay in.

Ramirez

62 IP

Set-up Balanced.  Walks leftys or gets them out, solid set up vs Rightys.

Vincent

65 IP

Long Man.  Can mop.  Can be a setup guy vs Rightys, but there are better in the pen.

De La Rosa

51 IP

Loogie.  I don’t know how to write instructions for a loogie, but you guys all use them so figure it out.  It would be a CRIME to let a right handed batter hurt him given the rest of the pen, please don’t do that.

 Additional comments:

Starters mop up if we are blown out. The pen is better than the starters, so the starters only pitch deep with a huge lead and come out at the first sign of giving it up.
