2017 Instructions

A nice return to the playoffs behind a killer bullpen and a murder’s row of left handed bats, and a run to the semis was a pleasant upside as the Bandits rejoined the upper tier in 2016.  This squad has some of the same strengths, but Harper is gone and AGon is not what he was so we will see if this group can be relevant in the playoffs this time out.  They are at least a viable candidate to play in the postseason, it depends how things unfold.  We will see…

Player Usage Limitations:

Position by Position:

C:Cervelli is the primary guy, Flowers goes against the Righty kills Righty (mostly to ensure Cervelli has plenty of ABs).  Cervelli is a bit better defensively for what it is worth, so he finishes what he starts most of the time.

1B:Gonzalez plays against the righty.  Johnson goes against the leftys (too bad he is a lefty).

2B:Cano starts every game and never comes out.  Injury backup is Johnson.

SS: Cozart starts versus the rightys, Mercer versus the leftys.  Cozart is much better defensively, but they both hit much better one way.  If we are behind and your pitcher has changed sides, might need to make the switch, if ahead, we will want to see Cozart in the game.

3B: Prado starts versus all leftys and most Rightys. Reyes starts against the Righty kill Righty guys.  Prado is more balanced and better defensively so err on having him in if you are unclear.

OF:Span and Pence play all the time. Other Upton starts against Leftys, with Dietrich against Rightys.  When Upton is in the game, he is in CF.  Span in LF and Pence is always in RF.  When Dietrich is in the game, he is in LF with Span in CF.  Lagares can’t start this year (can’t hit either, glad I kept him).  He can sub late for D.  Better than Upton against R pitchers.  Dietrich should NOT be in the game late with a lead.

The back end of the bullpen is loaded again, this concept worked last year, the challenge will be to score enough to get to them with a lead.  We have three good starters at the top, one legit #4, and two guys with opposite problems will share the #5 starter and Mop up duties.  Game plan is to get them through 6 innings either tied or ahead.  That’s the plan. Withrow and Ziegler are solid and can get us to the final three. Cishek, Thornburg, and Jansen are nails at the back end of the pen.  Starters only pitch in the 7th with a comfortable lead or way behind and scheduled to hit in the bottom of the 7th.

Roark

Try to get 6 IP out of him.  Against a lefty dominated lineup he will be effective in the 7th. If we are in the game, the big 3 finish it up.  If we aren’t he can stay longer.  See above for my thoughts on pitchers this year.

Happ

See Roark for the Plan.  A lefty screwballer can be effective, but your lefty killers will sometimes kill him.  Only pitches late with a huge lead.

Lackey

See Roark for the Plan.  A very good card except for HRs to Rightys.  If the bases are empty when he hits them, he is going to win games.  If they are all 3 run shots, it will be ugly.

Hammel

See Roark for the Plan.  He isn’t as good as the three above so will need help in the 5th and 6th more often.

Nicasio and Wisler

Leftys kill Nicasio, Rightys kill Wisler.  They will start a total of 10 times between them.  They can be the first one in to clean up the other’s mess, or to get away from a lineup designed to kill the other.  They have MOP UP duty when not starting.  Always hit for them in the 6th, even earlier if the matchups are bad or the pen is fresh in game 3.

Specific innings limitations:

None.

Additional comments:

All these guys come out in dots if it is still a game.  If we’re blown out early, the starter can go.

BULLPENDon’t fall behind…  If we lead after 6 IP, use Cishek or Thornburg to get to Jansen for the last 6 outs.  If Jansen is tired from saving the first two games of the series, Cishek and Thornburg can get the last 9 outs.

Jansen

69 IP

Killer Closer, balanced.  Yowza.  If we are ahead after 7, he gets the last 6 outs.

Thornburg

67 IP

Killer Closer #2.  Especially a L killer, better than Jansen to get three leftys out for a save.  Closes if Jansen is tired, can pitch 6 outs in the 6th and 7th to get to Jansen.

Cishek

64 IP

Closer #3. OK, the lefty diamonds make him not a closer but he crushes rightys. Alternate closer against rightys or a great guy to Stop a rally against the R.

Ziegler

68 IP

Set-up Balanced.  No diamonds or homers.  Will try to keep us in the game in the middle innings to give the offense a chance to deliver a lead to the big 3.

Withrow

30 IP

Screwball Righty, Stopper vs Left.  Let’s use him to get a lefty or two of three.  He walks too many, but he gives up homers to RH batters so don’t let him pitch to a righty in a key spot where we are still in the game.

Nicasio and Wisler

lots

Mop.  As listed above, they can come in for each other or mop up an early mess for one of the other starters.

 Additional comments:

Starters mop up if we are blown out. Cishek, Thornburg, and Jansen are better than the starters so let them bring it home if we are ahead.
