PCL 2018

2018 Instructions

Welcome to Lancaster!

Road Strategy:
Most series you will see two of three or three of four tough righty pitchers. In the 3 game sets, many of you will get Gsellman as the first pitcher. This is a bullpen game, so read the pitcher section about this. Follow the rule of 4 and feel free to pinch hit for him after 3 innings, even if he is throwing a shutout. My offense has lots of power and on base. The defense is shaky for 5-6 innings vs righty, so pay attention to the 1B/3B platoon, as I took a note from Jim’s “Pujols strategy” and have Rizzo at 3B to get Duda in the game for awhile. Have fun!

Position by position breakdown

Catcher-Realmuto full-time all day every day and rarely comes out unless a ph opportunity late is a key. Rivera backs up.

1B Rizzo against lefty and Duda vs Righty and Rizzo goes to 3B. Once the 5th inning hits, you have a decision vs righty. 5th inning up 4+ runs Duda out, Rizzo to 1B. 6th up 3+ same, 7th up 2+ same, Duda should be gone with a lead after 7innings. Rizzo to 1B and Harrison to 3B.

2B Castro plays both ways every day and rarely comes out.

3B Rizzo vs righty, Harrison vs lefty. See 1B notes when to move Rizzo back to 1B and bring in Harrison to 3B.

SS Seager is in most of the time and does not come out once he is in. Ahmed may start vs a few lefties. Ahmed comes out vs righty for Seager

LF  Thames vs righty and Pence vs lefty. No defense, but lots of offense. Pence is the better fielder.

CF  Gomez vs righty and Taylor vs lefty. Whoever starts usually does not come out unless we are losing. I want to save whoever doesn’t start to come in for Cruz for defense.

RF Cruz every day and comes out after 6 innings if we have a 3+ run lead for either Taylor or Gomez. Out after 7 with a 2+ run lead. Out after 8 with a 1+run lead.

Platoon / Injury

After the 7th, as per Bob

If I have a 2+ run lead after 7, then I want my best defense in. Rizzo should be at 1B, Harrison at 3B, Cruz out with Gomez in RF, Taylor in CF, and Pence in LF.

Player Usage Limitations:

Pitcher hitting / Pinch hitting: Use compare and common sense here please.

Defense/depth chart: See 1B/3B and OF discussion above for when to pull Duda and Cruz. With a 2+ run lead in the 8th, my best defense highlighted should be in.

(NOTES)

Starter#1 Strasburg
(long and hard)

175 innings. He is a stud and should complete several games. Look to get at least 7-8 innings from him. Can be pulled when in dots, but only Morrow and Giles are better than him. He can start the 9th with a 2+ run lead and go for the CG. One run games should go to Morrow.

Starter#2 Anderson
(patience)

141 innings. He should average 7 innings. Ok to go longer if a no-no or shutout. I will monitor at home if this should happen. At 7 innings, go to the pen. Ok to pull in dots, but try to get 7 innings.

Starter#3 deGrom
(patience)

201 innings. See Strasburg. Not quite as good, and can be pulled when in dots.

Starter#4 Hamels
(some patience)

148 innings. A lefty, so be careful after 6 innings. Ok to pull when in dots, or after giving up 4 runs. The bullpen will be better than him after 5 innings. If he has a 3+ run lead, he can go for a CG, but a 2 run or less lead should go to the pen after 7 innings.

Starter#5 Gsellman
(no patience)

120 bad innings. Use the rule of 4. If he manages to go 4 innings without giving up 4 runs or going into dots, pinch hit for him in his next at bat, but PLEASE do not let him lose the game once he gets past the 4th inning.  Pinch hit for him if he comes up after 3 innings to avoid getting “stuck” in the 4th waiting for him to give up 4 runs like he did vs SBM. In case you missed that e-mail, it is copied in the additional comment section. Neris is a good first bullpen move and could go 2-3 innings. Ok to let him bat if this happens. Gsellman always pitches 1st, so this is a “bullpen game”. After Neris, Hernandez or Zych would be a good bridge to later innings. If his 10 starts manage to give me 30 total innings that would be pretty dang good.

Specific innings limitations:

Anderson averages 7.

Additional comments:

I have 3 really good righty starters who should go deep into most games. Hit the pen early and hard for Gsellman, and Hamels can be pulled if he gives up 4. Remember the story of Gsellman at SBM:
Gsellman has pitched 3 shutout innings, and in the top of the 4th Lancaster is up 3-0 and Gsellman comes up to the plate. I look up the rule, and it says that he can also be pinch hit for after the 3rd. Up 3-0, I should have pinch hit for him, but I was so focused on 4 innings or 4 runs that I did not do so. Of course, in the bottom of the inning SBM gets on a roll. But now I can't take him out until he has given up 4. I am stuck, because I didn't follow the exception to the rule.

Eventually he does give up 4 runs, Neris comes in and gives up a HR, and SBM puts up 7 runs in the bottom of the 4th because I neglected to pinch hit for Gsellman in the top of the inning, which the rules say I could have done. Lesson learned. I am adding in my instructions to ph for him if he comes up after 3 innings. Geesh, what an idiot. Lost the game 8-3.

BULLPEN

R’y closer:

Morrow 44 innings pitches the 9th with a lead. Giles is the alternate closer.

L’y closer:

none

R’y setup:

Giles 63 innings can pitch the 7-8th innings. Hernandez is alternate.

L’y setup:

none

Situational:

    -R’y gets R’y:

Morrow, Giles, Zych

    -R’y gets L’y:

Morrow, Giles, Hernandez,

    -L’y gets L’y:

Blevins. Should rarely if ever see a righty.

    -L’y gets R’y:

none

Longman/mopup:

Gsellman when he does not start. Neris if Gsellman is not available, or let the starter clean up his own mess.

Additional comments:

Neris has over 70 innings, so if a starter gets pulled early (first 4 innings), he is the guy that comes in to pitch 2-3 innings. In this situation, go ahead and let him bat once so that he can get 2-3 innings. Example: Gsellman get pulled after 3 innings having given up 4 runs. Let Neris throw 2-3 innings to get through the 6th, even if he has to bat. Zych or Hernandez are good follow ups for an inning or two each. Of course, I leave it to your discretion if the bases get loaded with 2 outs and Neris is up. That would be a pinch hit opportunity.
