Lancaster Jethawks

PCL 2017

2017 Instructions

Welcome to Lancaster!
Lancaster is loaded! We picked up deGrom, Rizzo, Blanton, Buchter and Rodriguez. We also resigned Hamels. This team has good starters 1-4, a deep bullpen, and killer hitting. We are hoping to go all the way this year. This had better work, because we totally went for it! J

Road Strategy:

We have a pretty solid lineup without a lot of moving parts on the road. The only real platoons are at 2B and Catcher. Marte can run, and should. Eaton, Realmuto, Harrison, Taylor, and Espinosa can also run with a lead. The rest mostly swing from the heels. Most players stay in the game always EXCEPT Nelson Cruz, who comes out for defense if we have a lead after 6-7 innings. See below for more on that.

Road where HR for righty is <8 so at LVB,SBM,AZL, STL, VBS

Road where HR for righty is >/= 8, so at BAG,SCT,HAW,CHI,PBC, AUG

Position by position breakdown

Catcher-Realmuto vs righties and Rivera vs lefties. Once Realmuto is in the game, he should stay in unless PH for late in a key situation. When a lefty starter comes out, Rivera comes out next time he bats.

1B Rizzo all day everyday never comes out. If injured, Rodriguez comes in

2B Rodriguez and Harrison platoon. Whoever starts will most likely finish unless a key PH option late.

3B Arenado all day every day never comes out. If injured then Rodriguez comes in.

SS Seager is in most of the time. Espinosa against some lefties. When Seager is in, he does not come out until late with a big lead. If I am up 3+ runs in the 8th, you can bring in Espinosa for defense.

C Realmuto vs righties, Rivera vs lefties. Rivera NEVER faces a righty pitcher. Realmuto can see lefties. When in doubt, stick with Realmuto.

LF Cruz play 6 innings. If we are ahead by 3+, bring in Taylor, move him to CF and Marte to LF. If we are ahead by 1-2, wait until the 7th to make the same move. If we are behind, Cruz stays in.

CF Marte starts and never comes out. When Taylor comes in for Cruz, Marte goes to LF. If he is injured, Taylor or Smith comes in, depending on compare.

RF Eaton plays all day every day and never comes out.

Platoon / Injury

After the 7th, as per Bob

If I have a 2+ run lead after 7, then I want my best defense in the OF, which means Taylor in CF, Marte in LF, Eaton in RF. If I have a 3+ run lead in the 8th, bring in Espinosa at SS after Seager bats. If he is unlikely to come up, then make the switch.

Player Usage Limitations:

Pitcher hitting / Pinch hitting: Use compare and common sense here please.

Defense/depth chart: After the 6th inning if I have a 3+ run lead, then Cruz is out. With a 2+ run lead in the 8th, my best defense highlighted should be in.

(NOTES)

Starter#1 deGrom
(long and hard)

148 innings, so 12 starts of 7 innings and 8 starts of 8 innings. So look to go 7, and then evaluate the game situation. He may stay in for a no-hitter, but should be pulled if I have a 3+ lead. My bullpen is solid, so he can be pulled any time in the 7th, or later. Most of his starts are at home, and I can monitor.

Starter#2 Strasburg
(patience)

148 innings, so 12 starts of 7 innings and 8 starts of 8 innings. So look to go 7, and then evaluate the game situation. He may stay in for a no-hitter, but should be pulled if I have a 3+ lead. My bullpen is solid, so he can be pulled any time in the 7th or later. . Most of his starts are at home, and I can monitor.

Starter#3 Hamels
(patience)

No limits, but he is lefty. He should get into the 6th most starts, and could go all the way with a 3+ run lead. Once we get past 7 innings, the pen is better if they are available. If he gives up 4 or goes into dots before the 5th, pull him for the pen. Gsellman or FROD before the 5th. Torres in the 6th.

Starter#4 Matz
(patience)

132 innings, so he goes 6-7 innings. He may stay in for a no-hitter. Go to the pen after 6 innings with a 1-3 run lead. If we are leading by 4 or more, than he can go batter by batter in the 7th. If he gives up 4 or goes into dots before the 5th, pull him for the pen. Gsellman or FROD before the 5th. Torres in the 6th.

Starter#5 Koehler
(patience)

10 starts, all on the road. He is the weak spot, so the rule of four applies. After 4 innings if he is doing well, go batter by batter. If he gives up 4 runs, get him out. Prior to 6th, Gsellman, FROD or Torres should be first in. A full pen is behind him, so use it. See below for details.

Specific innings limitations:

Strasburg and deGrom 7-8 innings max. Matz 6-7 innings max. Unless a no-no.

Additional comments:

I will score some runs with this team, so be patient thru 5-6 innings. The pen is pretty loaded, so look to hit them hard innings 7-9. If any of my pitchers is throwing a no hitter, they should be allowed to stay in and attempt to complete it. After giving up a hit, they can be pulled based on my instructions.

BULLPEN

R’y closer:

Melancon 71 innings. Can pitch the 8th-9th innings. Use all 71 innings!!!

L’y closer:

Buchter 63 innings. He can go any time from 6th-9th innings. He can face rightys as well, so a 50% lefty/righty ratio is fine. Don’t be afraid to use him in the 6th-8th. I prefer Melancon in the 9th. He can face rightys in innings 6-7th. Don’t really want him facing the lefty killer in the 8th or 9th inning. Look to use up most of his innings.

R’y setup:

Blanton 80 innings. He can go in innings 6th-8th innings and is an alternate closer. Feel free to use him at anytime. A double switch so he can go 2 innings is a good move. Use up these great innings, particularly in the Matz and Koehler starts.

L’y setup:

Buchter. Ok to use at any time.

Situational:

    -R’y gets R’y:

Melancon

    -R’y gets L’y:

Blanton, Torres, Gsellman, FROD at SBM,PBC,AUG, and VBS

    -L’y gets L’y:

Buchter

    -L’y gets R’y:

Buchter

Longman/mopup:

FROD 52 innings. At Augusta, SBM, PBC and VBS, he will be MUCH more valuable as his HR issue vs leftys goes down.

Additional comments:

Lots of innings in the pen. Well over 300 really good innings. deGrom and Strassburg are tough. Hamels is good, but a lefty. I am fine with you hitting the pen long and hard, as they are a strength, especially starting after the 5th or 6th inning. Torres is very good, and can be brought in any time from innings 4-7. He has 82 innings and is pretty balanced.
