Lancaster Jethawks

PCL 2019

2019 Instructions

Welcome to Lancaster!  It is a new year and a new feel.

Path to the Playoffs (How to win with the Jethawks:
Pitching is the name of the game. We need to get to 48-50 wins to make the playoffs. deGrom and Greinke go long. Strasburg and Nova are mid-gamers, Matz not so much (lefty). We need to win 15 of deGrom’s 20 starts. We need to win 12-13 of Greinke’s 20 starts. If we do this, then we only need to win 21-23 of the remaining 50 to achieve our goal. Bullpen is solid, and we have some beef. Mallex Smith will buck the trend and run like crazy. Adam Eaton will do some bunting, so don’t fall out of your chair!

Home and road vs all lefty

Home vs all righty and road not listed in 5,6

Road vs righty at
BAG, SCT, AUG

Road vs righty at  SBM, VBS

Strategy vs lefty
We have a lot of OBP early in the lineup and we look to steal Smith a lot.
Strategy vs righty
The plan is to run Smith a lot, use Eaton to bunt him along, and then mash the ball.
Prior to the 5th
If your lefty comes out no changes until after the 5th. If your righty is replaced by a lefty, Santana can come in for Moustakas.
After the 5th
If your lefty is out, Rizzo comes in at 1B and Moustakas in at 3B. Eaton should come in for Herrera. If your righty comes out, Eaton is out for Herrera and Santana for Moustakas.

Position by position breakdown

Catcher Realmuto full-time all day every day and rarely comes out unless a ph opportunity late vs a lefty is a key. Caratini backs up. If Realmuto is injured against a righty, I would prefer Caratini to not bat 3rd. Mid-game consider a double switch at 3B to get a better bat in that spot. In a new game with Realmuto injured, move everyone up one spot and bat Caratini 8th.

1B Rizzo against righty and Reynolds against the lefty. Santana can back up.

2B Castro plays both ways every day and rarely comes out.

3B Moustakas against righty and Santana against lefty. Santana is more balanced. Reynolds will get a few starts at BAG, SCT, and AUG vs righty. He should be pulled for defense with a lead after the 7th. (6th is he batted and won’t come up in the 7th ).

SS Ahmed all day every day and doesn’t come out except for late game pinch hitter in the right spot. Kingery backs up.

LF  Kemp all day every day. Rarely comes out

CF  Smith all day every day and rarely comes out.

RF Eaton vs the righty and Herrera vs the lefty.

Platoon / Injury

After the 7th

If I have a 2+ run lead after 7, then I want my best defense in. See highlights below.

Player Usage Limitations:

Pitcher hitting / Pinch hitting: Use compare and common sense here please.

Defense/depth chart:  With a 2+ run lead in the 8th, my best defense highlighted should be in. OF Taylor should come in and play CF. Eaton in RF, Kemp can stay in LF or he can come out on a double switch and leave Smith in at LF.

(NOTES)

Starter#1 deGrom
(long and hard)

Long and hard. He should get at least 50% complete games as he is better than everyone else I have. If he goes into dots you can use compare to see if the pen is better. Think 8 innings and adjust from there. When in doubt, leave him in.

Starter#2 Greinke
(patience)

He should usually get to the 6th-8th inning. If he gets tired, you can pull him. If he gives up 4 runs you can pull him if he is tired. If he is NOT tired and has given up 4 runs, it depends on the score. Within 2 runs either way leave him in. He is a decent hitter. He will complete a few games

Starter#3 Strasburg
(patience)

Similar to Greinke, but not as good. He will probably go 5-7 innings, but can go longer if cruising with a 4+ run lead. Pull him when tired or given up 4 runs.

Starter#4 Nova
(some patience)

5-6 innings would be good. He can pitch the 7th with a 4+ run lead. Generally, the pen is better at that point. Pull him if he gives up 4 runs or gets tired. Dyson and/or Alvarez comes in first in innings 3-6 and if we are leading then go to the 3 headed closer.

Starter#5 Matz
(no patience)

He is a lefty. Enough said. He can be removed anytime the rules allow, so start looking at things in the 3rd inning. If he is cruising, then go to the 4th and pretty much after 4 innings it is a batter by batter proposition. Dyson and/or Alvarez comes in first in innings 3-6 and if we are leading then go to the 3 headed closer.

Specific innings limitations:

none

Additional comments:

deGrom, Greinke, and Strasburg should get a lot of innings. If a starter gets hit hard early (Nova and Matz) and you bring in Gsellman or Dyson, they should go a couple of innings unless we have a rally going and they come up to bat. No rally? Then let them bat. Example: Matz gets hit hard and is replaced after 2.1 innings. You bring in Gsellman. He should go at least 2 and if we haven’t made a comeback than Dyson or Alvarez should go another 2-3 innings.

BULLPEN

R’y closer:

Hernandez, Morrow, and Fields are a committee and a 3 headed closer. All three are excellent vs lefty. Hernandez and Fields solid vs righty. Starting in the 7th, if the starter needs to be replaced based on the above thoughts and it is a game, then use compare and have these guys finish it out. 136 innings combined, so feel free to use them as needed. Hernandez is primary as he has the most innings.

L’y closer:

Alvarez can go after the tough lefty and is good in innings 3-6. He has 63 innings and does not give up HR’s on his card, so he is good to throw in any park.

R’y setup:

Dyson in innings 3-6, then the 3-headed closer for 7-9.

L’y setup:

Alvarez generally to face 2 of 3 lefties. Don’t use if you will ph a lefty masher. Go with someone like Morrow instead. Alvarez has 63 innings and can go 2 innings at a time if brought in early.

Situational:

    -R’y gets R’y:

Fields, Hernandez

    -R’y gets L’y:

Morrow, Fields, Hernandez

    -L’y gets L’y:

Alvarez

    -L’y gets R’y:

none

Longman/mopup:

Gsellman if the starter gets ripped in the first 2 innings. Dyson is good for innings 3-6 and is balanced.

Additional comments:

The starts with Matz and Nova will require the most bullpen usage. A fresh pen should be available most times for them. All of Matz starts are in game 1. 16 of Nova’s starts are in game 1, and the other 4 he follows deGrom at home. Dyson will pitch multiple innings in these and it is ok to bat him once so that he can go 2-3 innings. He is the middle inning workhorse with 70 innings.
