2020 Instructions

2nd year team that I GM’d thinking I needed to keep building for a future day, and then they got to extras in the pre-season finals. Hmmm. I still think this team has holes compared to some of the serious juggernauts, but maybe we’ll be scrappy. Verlander and Morton will be fine but Ed Rod needs to contribute, and Chase Anderson and lefty Newcomb don’t make it easy to sleep at night. I don’t see how we end up with a winning record but we’ll see. Either way, we have the best hotels and restaurants!

Guidelines on Positions

WHEN YOUR LEFTY STARTER EXITS THE GAME BEFORE THE 6TH (Chicago and Augusta need not read this par.)
Slater has to go away in favor of Beni or Ramirez. Peraza stays in if we are way up (fielding at 2B), but PH Bote or Long if not. 7th inning or later if it’s close, make the best “compare” change. Keep the best fielding if I am up 2+.

WHEN YOUR RIGHTY STARTER EXITS THE GAME BEFORE THE 6TH
No changes. In the 7th or later, use “compare” to get best matchup re Bote and La Stella.

Double-Switching
I like this option except not for Benintendi, Betts, Bogaerts or Rizzo.

Defense Matrix – When possible, the best late defense is Wieters at C, Rizzo at 1B, Peraza at 2B (although Bote ok too), Bogaerts at SS, La Stella at 3B, mini Yaz in LF, Benintendi in CF and Betts in RF.

Starters Summary

Pretty solid top 3 starting rotation, all returning, but the other two will need help from the pen.

Justin Verlander 223 IP

He is our #1 starter, goes the full complement of 20 times, and he can go long and hard pitching until dots, or he can be pulled in the 8th or 9th for a PH if we are losing. If we are tied in the 8th or 9th, PH for him unless there are two outs and no one is on. If we are winning, he stays in until dots. He will automatically go into dots in the 9th, so I need to be up by 2 or more for him to stay in. Out after fist blemish.

Charlie Morton 195 IP

#2 Starter will go 20 times with no innings restriction. He can also go until dots, with the same late PH advice as Verlander. Morton actually likely to get more CGs than JV because there are no bops on his card.

Eduardo Rodriguez 203 IP

#3 LEFTY starter, also goes 20 times. Because he is lefty there will be several times when he is pulled during the 6th to avoid a lefty masher (JD Martinez types types), so I am planning on seeing him yanked in close games before dots. OK to pitch 7th and even 8th if he is sailing, but no longer, and always out if dots. The other way he gets yanked before dots is when a Ly crusher (you know who you are…as well as “4L” or greater hitters) comes up. If a bop makes a difference in the game, we need to either intentionally walk him (if possible and makes sense), or find a Ry reliever. Long way of saying “don’t let a Ly masher beat him”. 12 of his 20 starts are on the road and he goes last, so if I have enough bullpen, be aggressive in yanking.

Chase Anderson 139 IP

#4 Starter will go 16 times. 9 of those are on the road, and he always begins the series, so I can have a fresh pen to support him. Out in dots, out after 5th or later for PH if I am behind, and out in bottom of 6th or later if it is close and you have a string of righties coming up. Josh James is a good first reliever if you have a bunch of righties in your lineup.

Sean Newcomb 68 IP

#5 Starter will get the last 14 starts and will have a strict 5 inning limit (since he is a “4” SP). Out if dots, but also PH for him in the top of the 4th or 5th. Bradley or James or Buttrey is a good first reliever choice.

Specific innings limitations

Only Newcomb’s 5 max per outing.

Bullpen

383 innings is plenty. They are not as good as Verlander and Morton, but they are better than the other three starters.

Closer

Roberto Osuna (65 IP). 9th, or even 8th and 9th with lead or tied. Living with, but holding my breath on the HR risk v Rys.

Setup

Ty Buttrey (72 IP) has the best balance if you go: RLRLRLR, but not exactly setup material. He can also go long in the middle of games v balanced lineups.

Situational - Righty gets the Ry

Josh James (61 IP) and Archie Bradley (72 IP). Try to limit James against multiple lefties, especially in bandboxes. Bradley is the preferred choice in bandboxes, because he does not yield bops. Also, as discussed above, Bradley is the first-in long reliever for Newcomb starts, and he has the better balance. Either James or Bradley are the mops for games that got out of control.

Situational - Righty gets the Ly

Michael Lorenzen (83 IP) is a workhorse and he can go long or setup, and he is the alternate closer to Osuna, if needed. Better v lefties, and likely the reason why he comes in initially, but I am fine with him facing righties too. Load up the innings.

Lefty

Adam Morgan (30 IP) is the serious loogy and only lefty. Like any loogy, he comes in to face your lefty hitting stud and/or 2 of 3 lefties. Rarely pitches to more than 3 hitters (if he starts out against a lefty, and stays in for a righty, then if you PH for the next Ly hitter, I would think hard about taking him out), but he can come in at any important moment in the game, early or late.

Have fun! Buenos dias!
