2019 Instructions

Brand new team experimenting with the expansion procedures. Lots of Boston and Houston players, and they should be reasonably competitive. To find a playoff spot, they’ll need a good showing from their top three starters, and Mookie! Too bad they are in the West with juggernaut SC. Wild card?

Guidelines on Positions

WHEN YOUR LEFTY STARTER EXITS THE GAME BEFORE THE 6TH
Pearce stays in at 1B – no change. Hanson in for Valencia at RF. In RF, if you later go back to a Ly, then Kemp. At C, Stassi comes in for Ellis, but only after the 6th with a lead.

WHEN YOUR RIGHTY STARTER EXITS THE GAME BEFORE THE 6TH
Hanson departs in favor of Valencia. If you switch back later, Kemp comes in who then finishes the game. I really would like to keep Benintendi in the game, even against lefties; but if it’s late and we are losing, go to Bote. Beni stays in anyway if Bote is not available. Pearce comes in for Dietrich at 1B unless your diamond HR rating for lefty hitters is 10 or more (HAW, CHI, LAN and UTP), in which case, Dietrich stays in. Stassi stays in at C unless we are losing, then Ellis.

Double-Switching
I like this to minimize the number of pinch hitters I must use for the pitcher’s batting slot. 1B, 3B, LF and RF positions are the best spots to do this.

Defense Matrix – When possible, the best late defense is Stassi at C, Pearce at 1B, Holt at 2B, Bogaerts at SS, Bote at 3B, Benintendi in LF, Betts in CF and whatever/whoever in RF!

Starters Summary

Pretty solid starting rotation with the top 3 (it would be nice to get 6-7 IP out of each of them), and there are 359 innings in the pen for the other two and when the first 3 aren’t coming through.

Starting Pitcher Notes

Justin Verlander 214 IP

He is our #1 starter, goes the full complement of 20 times, and he can go long and hard pitching until dots, or he can be pulled in the 8th or 9th for a PH if we are losing. If we are tied in the 8th or 9th, PH for him unless there are two outs and no one is on. If we are winning, he stays in until dots.

Charlie Morton 167 IP

#2 Starter will go 20 times with no innings restriction. He can also go until dots, with the same late PH advice as Verlander.

Eduardo Rodriguez 130 IP

#3 LEFTY starter, also goes 20 times with strict 7 inning max. Because he is lefty there will be several times when he is pulled during the 6th to avoid a lefty masher (Voit types), so I am planning on about a 5-6 inning average which will be well below the limit. OK to pitch 7th if he is sailing, but no longer, and always out if dots. The other way he gets yanked is when a Ly crusher (Luke Voit, Jose Briceno, Carlos Villanueva types, you know who you are…as well as “4L” or greater hitters) comes up. If a bop makes a difference in the game, we need to either intentionally walk him (if possible and makes sense), or find a Ry reliever. Long way of saying “don’t let a Ly masher beat him”.

Nick Pivetta 164 IP

#4 Starter will go 20 times with no innings restriction. Out in dots, out after 5th or later for PH if I am behind, and out in bottom of 6th or later if it is close and you have a string of lefties coming up. Only caveat here is that, since he is going last in all the series, the amount of patience needed is dictated by what’s left of the pen. Quick hook if we have lots of pen left, and use some patience if not.

Steven Wright 54 IP

#5 Starter will get the last 10 starts and will have a strict 5 inning limit. Out if dots.

Specific innings limitations

ERod and Wright, as described above.

Bullpen

The Sun starters will hopefully give good outings into the middle and late part of games, but the pen does provide 359 innings of support (4 per game average). Lots of role playing so I can see 3 or more used per game, especially to support Wright. Many of the below listed relievers are “specialists”, so there are lots of “2 out of 3” type decisions.

Closer

Pedro Strop (60 IP) and he can come into the 8th inning when needed. Only caveat here is that there may better matchups by using Jeffress or Pressly (see “Situational – Righty gets the Ly discussion below), if they are available and you have lefties coming up.

Righty Set-up

No one person. It’s going to be a committee of the 4 below referenced pitchers to face a few batters and to avoid imbalances.

Situational - Righty gets the Ry

Roberto Osuna (38 IP) is nails against Rys, but his innings limit means he is a 1 inning guy, usually to try to get us out an early jam. Tommy Hunter (64 IP) will have to be the more regularly used Ry middle or long reliever against more righty favoring lineups saving Strop for late innings. Hunter also has the most balanced card.

Situational - Righty gets the Ly

Ryan Pressly (71 IP) and Jeremy Jeffress (77 IP) are both good options.  Pressly more so earlier, and Jeffress more so in the setup/closer range. Use and abuse these two against lefty heavy lineups, but I also don’t mind facing some Rys.

Lefty

Adam Morgan (49 IP) is the only lefty. He has value, but his weakness v righties to the long ball will likely keep him out of some series like SCT, UTP and Chicago. His walks and bad hold rating v lefty hitters also mean he is better suited to enter with multiple runners on base. His best use is earlier and against hitters that won’t be subbed for. Needless to say by now, he is a mop when the game is out of control.

Have fun!
