Bay Area Giants 2018 Instructions

The Giants, in 2017, ended up with a record of 44-46, and 25-20 at home; finishing 7th in the league – a step up from last place in 2016.  Although they had the lowest batting average in the league of .220, their pitching ranked 5th, keeping them respectable.

Mike Trout did win the league MVP for 2017.

In the auction, BAG resigned MadBum for another 4 yrs, and picked up lefty Sam Freeman to be their future closer. In the batting ranks, Gyorko, Freese, Alonso  and Pirela were picked up to push the Giants to the playoffs for 2018.

The RF fence was brought in about 6 feet to help the Lefties…

     <Player Usage Limitations-  Schimpf & Iannetta:  pull after 3 AB’s……

  • In Lineups #1,#2,&#3 above:   If LEFTY Starter comes out prior to 7th  for a ritey, and we are trailing, replace 1b & 3b with better matchups after 4th inning; with a lead, leave all in until 7th &  look for better matchups & best defense to hold our lead. Between 5th & 7th and our lead starts to falter, compare and put in best matchups @ 3b & 1b.
  • In Lineup #4 & #5 & #6 above: If RITEY Starter comes out prior to 6th for a Lefty,  pullout Joyce & Schimpf right away & leave all others in thru 6 innings, if we are leading. If tied or losing, go to better situational matchups in top of 5th or later. If winning by 2 or more, bring in best defense mid 7th ---  mid-8th if leading by 1 run or more.

MISCELLANEOUS
Pitcher hitting / Pinch hitting / Pinch running

  • Early PH situation – innings 1-6, use MadBum, Wainwright, & Leake  if not an Rbi situation vs Lefty or Ritey pitcher and not starting later in your series.
  • All Pitchers sacrifice, even with two strikes.
  • PH vs lefty:  All but, Joyce;                 For Power: Iannetta, Alonso[L], Gyorko, Schimpf[L], Altherr.
  • PH vs righty:  All but Russell;             For Power: Schimpf[L], Grandal[L], Iannetta, Joyce[L], Alonso[L];
  • PH in clutch:   Pirela, Gyorko & Freese in that order;
  • PR(s):  Villar, Hernandez, Owings, Altherr, Schimpf, Russell in that order;   Use pitchers Leake (14);
  • Steal:  You must hold* --- Trout, Hernandez, Altherr, Pirela;     Do NOT steal – Pirela b’cuz of pickoff.
  • Batter/Pitcher matchups to avoid:  Joyce vs lefty and Russell vs Ritey unless extra innings or no other choice.

Bunting/H&R/#2 slot

  • Bunting:   Hernandez for Safety Squeeze situation, or sets up winning run. Wainwright is an A-bunter also…..
  • Hit & Run:  N/A
  • #2 slot:  Everyone will always hit away;

Offense

  • Typical stealing decisions:  70% to 2nd; 75% to 3rd;      ‘*’ Stealers:  see above.
  • Safety squeeze:  Use always if  ‘A’ bunter is up. Can PH bunt with  Wainwright.
  • Score at 70%; or 50% with two outs and 3rd inning or later;  If prior to 6th inning and pitcher due up next and 2 outs, score at 40% or more where a PH will not be an option.  {If 2 outs and down 5+ runs, hold the runners; unless pitcher is due up and no PH is an option, then go ahead and score}
  • Send low percentage trailer (10 or less) to 2nd, never to 3rd, when you throw home and lead runner is 75% or less to score. If pitcher is due up and 2 outs, send all trailers to force you to concede a run.
  • Extra base:  80% or better with 1 out or less—Don’t make 3rd out.
  • Tagup to 3rd:  Always try for if out chance is only 5%.

Defense

  • Late substitutions:  see best defense notes on page 3.
  • Holding runners:  Hold all * stealer;  hold a non-* only if his chances are 35% to get the lead AND 70% to steal.
  • Corners in:    If you H&R when I bring the corners in, then set the infield back the next time.   {I’d rather give up the sac then the hit and run}. With runner on 3rd, bring in corners from 2nd inning on.
  • Infield in:     Play INFIELD IN to cut down tying or go-ahead run from 6th inning on.
  • Outfield in:   runner on 3rd (12 or better) and 9th inning or later, and less than 2 outs and winning run.

Throwing

  • Outfield throws/cutoffs: Throw thru to plate on all trying to score at 1-16 or less. 16 or more, hit cutoff. Throw thru if you don’t send trailer.  3rd out situation, throw thru to plate, cutoff if trailer is a lot slower. If both runners are fast, throw thru to plate. If lead runner is tying run, hold trail runner at 1st to prevent setting up winning run (if lead runner is 11 or more to score).
  • Throws to 3rd:  Stop trail runners from advancing.
  • Always get the sure out on Defense Option plays, unless runner is 1-3 or less.

Intentional Walks

  • Always, no matter what after 4th inning:   ANYONE that has hit 2 homers in the game with a runner on & 1st open. Walk same batter in 7th inning or later no matter what (unless would walk in the run).
  • Stud hitter with a runner on, & 1st base open, and less than 2 outs (and it sets up better matchup situation with next hitter); if next matchup would be a stud PH off the bench, then don’t do it.
  • In the 8th or later, consider walking your stud hitter whether 1st occupied or not, to get to a better matchup (rule 4.8), no matter if loads bases or runners are put in scoring position. (I would rather take a chance on a less stud hitter).
  • Consider walking the #8 slot if there are 2 outs and the pitcher is due up early in the game, or you probably won’t pinch-hit in that situation with your stud closer late in the game.

Starter#1   Lamet
 (some patience)

Stays in early, even in dots until 7th. Bat for no matter what in top of 7th.
Top of 6th , if tied or losing within 3 runs and we have runners in scoring position with 2 outs, go ahead and PH for. Bottom of 6th, if tied or winning by less than 2 runs, with runner in scoring position, go ahead and bring in relief. 6 innings max

Starter#2   MadBum
(some patience)

The LEFTY starter. Same as Lamet.
{Limited to 6 innings only}{5 innings @ home}

Starter#3   Leake
(some patience)

Needs to pitch into bottom of 5th inning even if in dots; If bullpen is tired,  then Leake can take 1 for the team and finish out tired. If BP not tired, then look for relief in 5th if gets 2 runners on; same scenario in 6th inning.

Starter#4   Wainwright
(some patience)

Needs to pitch into bottom of 5th. If we are within 2 runs either way, and 2 runners get on base, go ahead and bring in relief. Can pitch 6th inning, but same scenario as 5th inning, if gets into trouble.     {6 innings max}

Starter#5    Despaigne
(quick hook)

Same as Wainwright.
{6 innings max, 5 some @ home}

Specific innings limitations:

All Starters other than Leake only go 6 inn max!!!

Additional comments:

Starters need to pitch into bottom of 5th inning even if in dots early. Starters can only pitch thru 6 innings if taking one for the team.
If we are within 2 runs either way, then Garcia or Freeman(L) will be 1st reliever in for starters.
If we are 3+ runs either way, then Phelps or Ramos can be 1st in for starters.
The 1st in relievers may go at least 2-3  innings to bridge to rest of BP.
Kimbrel & Freeman can be used at will for 1-2 innings each, not just in closer roles necessarily.            ---See no-hitter notes below---

[Bay Area Giants]   p.6

TOP of 7th:  All starting pitchers come out if pitchers spot is up even if NOT in dots;
(Leake can stay in and bat with a 4+ lead…or taking one for the team)
BOT of 7th:  If Leake is still in and gets 1 runner on – go to bullpen for relief (unless we are leading by 5+ runs);
Leake can stay in if taking one for the team. He is ONLY starter to go more than 6 innings.

NOTE--  ideally:  Starters would get thru 6th;  All starters need to pitch into bottom of 5th….at 5th if it is still a game (within 2 runs either way), then go ahead and bring in relief if they start to get into trouble with 2 runners on.

No-hitter:  NOT one starter other than Leake pitches past 6 innings (even if pitching a no-hitter!!!)  Leake will
stay in with a 2+ lead until 1 runner gets on in 7th or later; if tied, losing or leading by only 1 run – revert to above Bottom of 7th situation.

Limited innings:  None with relievers;
