Bay Area Instructions 2016 instructions

The Giants, in 2015, ended up with a losing 39-51 record coming out of the tough West division.

The owners picked up JJ Hardy & Josh Harrison in the WWW, to anchor ss & 2b respectively.

In the auction, the Bombers spent their money wisely & re-signed catchers Yasmani Grandal , Chris Iannetta & closer Craig Kimbrel by exercising their RFA rights on each, as well as picking up 3b/Lf Adonis Garcia, along with Lf Kyle Schwarber, and 8 new pitchers.

**Check the Lineups, they are not the same as La Quinta.
***Also note – PH restrictions on Schwarber; & innings restrictions on bullpen.

<Player Usage Limitations- Schwarber & Garcia in blowouts….

  • In Lineups #1 above:   If LEFTY Starter comes out prior to 7th  for a ritey, and we are trailing, replace Garcia, Van Slyke, and Iannetta with better matchups after 5th inning; with a lead, leave all in until 7th &  look for better matchups & best defense to hold our lead. Between 5th & 7th and our lead starts to falter, compare and put in best matchups. If losing, look for better matchups right away.
  • In Lineup #4 & #5 & #6 above: If RITEY Starter comes out prior to 6th for a Lefty,  leave all in thru 6 innings, if we are leading. If tied or losing, go to better situational matchups in 5th or later. If winning by 2 or more, bring in best defense after 7th ---  after 8th if leading by 1 run or more.

*Put Grandal in at catcher end of 7th if leading by 2 or more – end of 8th if tied or leading by less than 2.
**Put Calhoun to CF (in for Schwarber)/Heyward to RF – end of 7th, IF we are leading by 3 or more.

NEVER Comes out ---  Grandal (unless blowout), Heyward; Seldom comes out --- Franco, Harrison; (IF blowout of 7+ runs either way by 7th inning --- pull Grandal, Franco, Schwarber, A. Garcia)

INJURY Replacement:

C- Schwarber only plays c if both Iannetta and Grandal are injured;

1b- (for Grandal) Van Slyke vs lefty/Calhoun to RF; (for Cron) Franco to 1b, Harrison to 3b, Owings to 2b (bat 7th).

2b- Owings

3b- Harrison in large parks; A. Garcia in small park

ss- Owings

Lf- (for Upton) A. Garcia; (for Garcia) Van Slyke

Cf-(for Heyward) Calhoun vs both

Rf-(for Schwarber) Calhoun vs both;

IMPORTANT:  Schwarber restrictions: bcuz he is maxed out in starts, he WILL NOT PH at all, unless no one else left on bench & def-initely pull him after 4 AB when he starts(not 4 PA – but 4 AB’s). If he does not start, he prob will not enter game.

MISCELLANEOUS
Pitcher hitting / Pinch hitting / Pinch running

  • Early PH situation – innings 1-6, use MadBum & Burnett  if not an Rbi situation vs Lefty or Ritey pitcher and not starting later in your series.
  • In PH/bunt situation, consider using pitchers Burnett & Heston (A) to bunt, if not starting later in your series.
  • MadBum will always swing away, no matter if looking at double-play. All other Pitchers sacrifice, even with two strikes.
  • PH vs lefty:   Iannetta, Van Slyke, Garcia, Cron, Calhoun [L];
  • PH vs righty:   Upton, Cron, Calhoun [L], Garcia, Van Slyke, Iannetta; Do not PH – Schwarber.
  • PH in clutch:   Owings, Cron, Calhoun;
  • PR(s):  Owings, Upton, Schwarber, Calhoun;   Use pitchers Burnett (13) & Eickhoff (12);
  • Steal:  You must hold* --- Harrison, Owings, Heyward, Upton, Schwarber; Do NOT steal – Schwarber & Harrison.
  • Batter/Pitcher matchups to avoid:  Upton & Schwarber vs lefty unless extra innings or no other choice.
  • MadBum: Is my 14th hitter; bench player if necessary where no one is left on bench – he can play any position.

Bunting/H&R/#2 slot

  • Bunting:   Just Owings.
  • Hit & Run: none.
  • #2 slot:  Owings will always bunt;   Harrison, Calhoun, & Schwarber will always hit away.

Offense

  • Typical stealing decisions:  70% to 2nd; 75% to 3rd;      ‘*’ Stealers:  see above.
  • Safety squeeze:  Use always if  ‘A’ bunter is up. Can PH bunt with an ‘A’ pitcher.
  • Score at 70%; or 50% with two outs and 3rd inning or later;  If prior to 6th inning and pitcher due up next and 2 outs, score at 40% or more where a PH will not be an option.
  • Send low percentage trailer to 2nd, never to 3rd, when you throw home and lead runner is 75% or less to score. If pitcher is due up and 2 outs, send all trailers to force you to concede a run.
  • Extra base:  80% or better with 1 out or less—Don’t make 3rd out.
  • Tagup to 3rd:  Always try for if out chance is only 5%.

Defense

  • Late substitutions:see best defense notes on page 3.
  • Holding runners: Hold all * stealer;  hold a non-* only if his chances are 35% to get the lead AND 70% to steal.
  • Corners in: If you H&R when I bring the corners in, then set the infield back the next time.   {I’d rather give up the sac then the hit and run}.
  • Infield in: Play INFIELD IN to cut down tying or go-ahead run from 2nd inning on.
  • Outfield in: not at home.

Throwing

  • Outfield throws/cutoffs:Throw thru to plate on all trying to score at 1-16 or less. 16 or more, hit cutoff. Throw thru if you don’t send trailer. 3rd out situation, throw thru to plate, cutoff if trailer is a lot slower. If both runners are fast, throw thru to plate. If lead runner is tying run, hold trail runner at 1st to prevent setting up winning run (if lead runner is 11 or more to score).
  • Throws to 3rd: Stop trail runners from advancing.
  • Always get the sure out on Defense Option plays, unless runner is 1-3 or less.

Intentional Walks

  • Always, no matter what after 4th inning: ANYONE that has hit 2 homers in the game with a runner on & 1st open. Walk same batter in 8th inning or later no matter what.
  • Stud hitter with a runner on, & 1st base open, and less than 2 outs (and it sets up better matchup situation with next hitter).
  • In the 8th or later, consider walking your stud hitter whether 1st occupied or not, to get to a better matchup (rule 4.8).
  • Consider walking the #8 slot if there are 2 outs and the pitcher is due up early in the game, or you probably won’t pinch-hit in that situation with your stud closer late in the game.

WATCH the computer resets of corners in, holding runners, etc after each batter.

Bumgarner-20games;  Richards-20games;  Burnett-20games;  Heston-20games;  Eickhoff-10games;

Starter#1 Bumgarner       (much patience)

The LEFTY starter. Stays in early, even in dots until 7th. If in dots and tied or losing, bat for. Can pitch in the 8th or 9th, until dots with a 2+ lead. If gets 1 runner on in 8th  or 9th, look for situational relief, unless there is a 3+ run lead. Can finish with 3+ lead.

Starter#2 Richards
(some patience)

Comes out in dots (unless blowout). If not in dots and 1 run or less in game, go to situational pen in 7th. Can finish with a 3+ lead.

Starter#3 Burnett
(some patience)

Always comes out in dots, or gives up 4+ runs, unless prior to 6th and bullpen is tired; then taking 1 for the team.

Starter#4 Heston
(some patience)

Same as Burnett.

Starter#5 Eickhoff
(quick hook)

Always comes out in dots or gives up 4 runs. Should be out after 5th inning;

Specific innings limitations:

Eickhoff – limit to 5 innings only!!

Additional comments:

Richards & MadBum stays in dots until 7th unless blowout, then leave in… If we’re blown out early by 7+ runs, or the starter goes into dots in 1st 3 innings, then starter can take one for the team to save the bullpen. See 7th inning below.

-R’y gets R’y:

-R’y gets L’y:

Longman/mopup/mid:

Long(6th or earlier)—Clippard (1st in for Eickhoff & Heston) & Blanton in after Clippard if necessary.  Jeffress (1st in for Burnett, Richards & MadBum)
Mopup—Blanton
Mid----Jeffress, Clippard, Blanton

TOP of 7th: If starter is still in and gets 1 runner on – go to bullpen for relief (unless we are leading by 5+ runs); MadBum & Richards can stay in with 3 runs or more lead. (Unless it’s a blowout and the starter is taking one for the team).
BOT of 7th: All starting pitchers come out if pitchers spot is up if we are tied or losing even if NOT in dots; Unless it’s a blowout either way. (Richards & MadBum can stay in and bat with a 3+ lead…)
NOTE-- ideally: Starters would get to 7th;  6th  or earlier(see above)---Clippard, Jeffress, & Blanton; 7th ---any combo; 8th—Miller or Hinojosa (bcuz of limited innings on each, try to alternate each game/see below);  9th—Kimbrel;
No-hitter: Eickhoff only goes 5 innings (even if pitching a no-hitter!!!)  All other pitchers stay in with a 2+ lead until 1 runner gets on in 7th or later; if tied, losing or leading by only 1 run – revert to above Top of 7th situation.

Restrictions on:  MILLER-can pitch 1 inning in 3 game series, 1.2 innings in 4-game series. HINOJOSA-1 inning only in 3-game series & 1 inning in HOME 4-game series. Try to alternate games with these two.
KIMBREL-pitches as a closer/9th or later only (1 inning only).
