Bay Area Giants 2017 Instructions

The Giants, in 2016, ended up with the worst record in the PCL
at 33-57, along with 2nd worst batting average of .230, league low of stolen bases with an all-time record of 12, and a 4.20 era.

The upside of 2017 is winning the Preseason Tourney trophy for the 3rd time in 21 years. The owners picked up Addison Russell & Mike Leake in the WWW, to anchor ss & the #4 starter.

In the auction, the Bombers spent their money wisely & went after the #1 overall player of Mike Trout for a nominal $40. They also picked up lefty Rich Hill for 2 years as their #2 starter. Re-aligning their infield with Cesar Hernandez at 2nd & Jonathan Villar @ 3b, CJ Cron & Chris Carter splitting duties @ 1b.

<Player Usage Limitations- Joyce in blowouts either way & after 3 AB’s

  • In Lineups #1&#2 above:   If LEFTY Starter comes out prior to 7th  for a ritey, and we are trailing, replace Iannetta, Franco and Altherr, with better matchups after 4th inning; with a lead, leave all in until 7th &  look for better matchups & best defense to hold our lead. Between 5th & 7th and our lead starts to falter, compare and put in best matchups, replacing Iannetta, Franco and Altherr.
  • In Lineup #4 & #5 & #6 above: If RITEY Starter comes out prior to 6th for a Lefty,  leave all in thru 6 innings, if we are leading. If tied or losing, go to better situational matchups in 5th or later. If winning by 2 or more, bring in best defense mid 7th ---  mid-8th if leading by 1 run or more.

Best Defense [highlighted in CAPS].  Mid 8th if we are leading.
*Put Grandal in at catcher by bottom of 7th
**Put Altherr in  for Joyce if we are winning by 2 or more @ mid-7th. PH for Joyce in top of 8th or later. Joyce should come out after 3 AB’s.

NEVER Comes out ---  Trout (only in blowouts), Calhoun;  Seldom comes out --- Russell, Grandal, Hernandez, Villar;
(IF blowout of 7+ runs either way by 7th inning --- pull Grandal, Trout, Russell, Joyce)

INJURY Replacement:   1b- Carter for Cron vs both. Cron for Carter vs rities, Grandal for Carter vs lefties;   2b- Owings vs lefties, Villar vs rities (Schimpf to 3b);  3b- Schimpf vs rities, Franco vs lefties;  ss- Villar vs both (Schimpf to 3b vs rities, Franco to 3b vs lefties);    Lf- Schimpf for Joyce; (for Altherr) Schimpf or Owings;   Cf- Altherr vs both (move to bottom of lineup);  Rf- Joyce or Altherr  or Owings vs lefties, Joyce vs rities (Schimpf to Lf);
IMPORTANT:  Joyce should come out after 3 AB’s. If we are losing, Schimpf is a good replacement.

MISCELLANEOUS
Pitcher hitting / Pinch hitting / Pinch running

  • Early PH situation – innings 1-6, use MadBum & Leake  if not an Rbi situation vs Lefty or Ritey pitcher and not starting later in your series.
  • All Pitchers sacrifice, even with two strikes.
  • PH vs lefty:  Iannetta, Grandal, Owings, Hernandez, Villar, Altherr, Cron, Joyce[L]; For Power: Carter, Franco, Schimpf & Russell;
  • PH vs righty:  Hernandez, Villar, Russell, Franco, Owings, Altherr;    For Power: Schimpf[L], Grandal[L], Carter, Joyce[L], Cron;    Do not PH – Iannetta vs Ritey;
  • PH in clutch:   Owings & Cron;
  • PR(s):  Villar, Hernandez, Owings, Altherr, Schimpf, Russell in that order;   Use pitchers MadBum (12);
  • Steal:  You must hold* --- Trout, Villar, Altherr, Owings;     Do NOT steal – Hernandez (gets picked off).
  • Batter/Pitcher matchups to avoid:  Iannetta vs Ritey unless extra innings or no other choice.

Bunting/H&R/#2 slot

  • Bunting:Villar & Hernandez for Safety Squeeze situation, or sets up winning run.
  • Hit & Run:Calhoun.
  • #2 slot:  Everyone will always hit away;  UNLESS Villar in safety squeeze of tying or go-ahead run situation in 4th inning or later.

Offense

  • Typical stealing decisions:  70% to 2nd; 75% to 3rd;      ‘*’ Stealers:  see above.
  • Safety squeeze:  Use always if  ‘A’ bunter is up. Can PH bunt with an ‘A’ pitcher.
  • Score at 70%; or 50% with two outs and 3rd inning or later;  If prior to 6th inning and pitcher due up next and 2 outs, score at 40% or more where a PH will not be an option.
  • Send low percentage trailer (10 or less) to 2nd, never to 3rd, when you throw home and lead runner is 75% or less to score. If pitcher is due up and 2 outs, send all trailers to force you to concede a run.
  • Extra base:  80% or better with 1 out or less—Don’t make 3rd out.
  • Tagup to 3rd:  Always try for if out chance is only 5%.

Defense

  • Late substitutions:  see best defense notes on page 3.
  • Holding runners:  Hold all * stealer;  hold a non-* only if his chances are 35% to get the lead AND 70% to steal.
  • Corners in:If you H&R when I bring the corners in, then set the infield back the next time.   {I’d rather give up the sac then the hit and run}. With runner on 3rd, bring in corners from 2nd inning on.
  • Infield in: Play INFIELD IN to cut down tying or go-ahead run from 6th inning on.
  • Outfield in: runner on 3rd (12 or better) and 9th inning or later, and less than 2 outs and winning run.

Throwing

  • Outfield throws/cutoffs: Throw thru to plate on all trying to score at 1-16 or less. 16 or more, hit cutoff. Throw thru if you don’t send trailer.  3rd out situation, throw thru to plate, cutoff if trailer is a lot slower. If both runners are fast, throw thru to plate. If lead runner is tying run, hold trail runner at 1st to prevent setting up winning run (if lead runner is 11 or more to score).
  • Throws to 3rd:  Stop trail runners from advancing.
  • Always get the sure out on Defense Option plays, unless runner is 1-3 or less.

Intentional Walks

  • Always, no matter what after 4th inning:   ANYONE that has hit 2 homers in the game with a runner on & 1st open. Walk same batter in 7th inning or later no matter what (unless would walk in the run).
  • Stud hitter with a runner on, & 1st base open, and less than 2 outs (and it sets up better matchup situation with next hitter); if next matchup would be a stud PH off the bench, then don’t do it.
  • In the 8th or later, consider walking your stud hitter whether 1st occupied or not, to get to a better matchup (rule 4.8), no matter if loads bases or runners are put in scoring position. (I would rather take a chance on a less stud hitter).
  • Consider walking the #8 slot if there are 2 outs and the pitcher is due up early in the game, or you probably won’t pinch-hit in that situation with your stud closer late in the game.

WATCH the computer resets of corners in, holding runners, etc after each batter.

MadBum-20games;  Hill-20games;  Nolasco-20games;  Leake-20games;  Karns-10games;

Starter#1   MadBum  (much patience)

The LEFTY starter. Stays in early, even in dots until 7th. If in dots and tied or losing, bat for. Can pitch in the 8th or 9th, until dots with a 3+ lead or until he gets 1 runner on; then look for situational relief. If tied or up by 2 runs or less in top of 8th, go ahead and PH for; Bottom of 8th—go ahead and bring in late inning relief to start inning.

Starter#2 Hill
(some patience)

The 2nd LEFTY. Comes out in dots (unless we are winning by 6+ runs). Can pitch thru 6th full innings. If tied or losing and no runners on in 6th inning, let hit; if runners are on & no outs, he can bunt; with 1 or 2 outs he can be PH for.
{Limited to 6 innings only}{5 innings @ home}

Starter#3 Nolasco
(some patience)

Always comes out in dots, or gives up 4+ runs, unless prior to 6th and bullpen is tired; then taking 1 for the team.

Starter#4 Leake
(some patience)

Same as Nolasco;

Starter#5 Karns
(quick hook)

Always comes out in dots, or gives up 3 runs, unless taking 1 for the team up through 7 innings only.
**Can relieve when not starting your series. {Limited to 7 innings only}

Specific innings limitations:

Hill – limit to 6 innings only!!  (5 innings @ home);  Karns – 7 innings only!!

Additional comments:

MadBum stays in dots until 7th unless blowout, then leave in… If we’re blown out early by 7+ runs, or the starter goes into dots in 1st 3 innings, then starter can take one for the team to save the bullpen. See 7th inning below. See no-hitter notes below.

BOT of 7th: If starter is still in and gets 1 runner on – go to bullpen for relief (unless we are leading by 5+ runs); MadBum can stay in with 3 runs or more lead. (Unless it’s a blowout and the starter is taking one for the team – Not Karns, and Hill already out of game).
